A Peek Into the Past

Fire Meets Glass
Born from fire, glass art dates back to the ancient Romans, but lampworking — using a flame to shape molten glass — truly flourished in Murano, Italy, in the 14th century. Artisans used oil lamps to melt glass rods, shaping them into delicate beads and intricate figurines. These glassmakers were so skilled — and their methods so coveted — that leaving Murano without permission was once punishable by death. In the 19th century, the invention of the mechanical press in 1820 revolutionized glassmaking, leading to glass products becoming more accessible. Even though torches replaced oil lamps, the essence remained unchanged: glass, fire, and the steady hands of the artist.

Strategy Meets Luck
Meanwhile, across the seas in 17th-century England, a poet named Sir John Suckling dreamed up a card game of skill and luck: cribbage. Soldiers played it in dimly lit taverns, scoring their hands with pegs slid along wooden boards. Over time, what started as a soldier’s pastime became a beloved game for families, a quiet thread linking generations. Today, cribbage lives on at kitchen tables, in cozy cabins, and even online, where the familiar rhythm of “15 for 2” still echoes, reminding us that some traditions never peg out.

So, What happens when these two worlds meet?
